 Hospice Volunteers

Hospice Volunteers provide valuable support to our Hospice staff and the patients and families they serve. Volunteers are carefully chosen and complete a 27 hour training course preparing them to supplement the professional services provided by our staff.  They can do many things that add comfort and quality of life to hospice patients and caregivers.

Volunteers do not routinely provide personal care, but if the need arises, volunteers help make a client safe and comfortable.  The staff at Franklin County Home Health Agency is always prepared to lend support to volunteers.

Families receiving care from the Agency’s Hospice program welcome volunteers into their homes for much needed support.  Volunteers assist with meals or snacks, do light housekeeping, run errands, and provide transportation.

They also offer companionship and respite.  This may include reading to or talking with the patient, being there while a weary family member naps or takes a walk, playing with a child or listening when someone needs to talk.

Hospice Volunteer Training

We offer a comprehensive 9-week training course for people interested in volunteering for Hospice, or learning more about the dying process.

The training is held every Spring & Fall at Franklin County Home Health, St. Albans.

Volunteers are needed throughout our community.
The training will prepare you to volunteer in the homes of terminally ill patients to offer respite to caregivers and compassionate support to patients.

Training is provided by skilled professionals in a format compatible with a busy schedule.

The classes include:

  • Personal Death Awareness

  • Family Dynamics

  • Physical Care of the Dying

  • Philosophy & Background of Hospice

  • Grief & Bereavement

  • Communication Skills

  • Good Body Mechanics

  • Funeral Arrangements

  • Child Grief
